Yeah, we frequently hear this one, partcicularly during athletic events or other competitions. But one may not automatically assume that saying "Go for the gold!" can only be interpreted as going for the gold medal, or the first place.
For some, going for the gold can mean this:
pretty FANCY car, isn’t it? Just goes to show you guys, you can never say for sure how what you say could be interpreted! LOL.
