The Ford Fab 1 from the ‘Thunderbirds’

A movie watched last night by the kids at home has triggered my interest to feature a fabulous and amazing car for today… No, it is not a Rolls-Royce as you might think, nor a Mazda with Mazda air intake, but a Ford. Yeah… A Ford… Ford Fab 1 specifically.

The ‘Thunderbirds’ was a big budget, live-action family movie based on the cult ‘Thunderbirds’ TV show. Ford Motor Co. has supported the production of the film through providing assistance in the development of Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward’s Fab 1 limousine.

The Ford Fab 1 is actually a stunning pink, 27 feet long, six-wheel/bubble canopy vehicle. It features clear Ford Thunderbird design cues. In the movie, it can transform between car jet plane and hydrofoil, making it amazing for the kids watching.

According to Tim Bevan, ‘Thunderbirds’ producer, “FAB 1 provides the first glimpse into the new-look ‘Thunderbirds’ movie. We hope to realize fully the genius of the original series and bring it to like for an entirely new generation worldwide.”

Ford Design Europe has led the design of the Fab 1 vehicle. It has also delivered a number of ‘virtual’ concept vehicles for the movie. The Ford EX concept and the Focus C-MAX have been prominently featured in some scenes in the film.

At the making and prior to the global release of the movie, Chris Bird, Director of Design for Ford of Europe, said, “For our design team, it was essential that the new Fab 1 captured the essence of the original – its size, power and sheer presence… The people that have worked on this car were already fans, so we hope the end result will please ‘Thunderbirds’ purists as well as the new generations of movie goers who will see it in action on-screen.”

In the real world, the best thing about the Ford Fab 1 is that it works. However, it isn’t that driver-friendly as far as you might expect. Considering the length comparable to a three-story building, the car is hard to drive on traffic and isn’t even convenient to steer. You will also notice that this pink vehicle does not have side mirrors, making it far from being an ideal road vehicle.
