The First-Ever Built Ferrari Resurfaces

Filed under: Uncategorized - BigPimple @ 12:50 am
Ferrari cars are simply defined as ‘masterpieces’ or should I say, the world’s greatest? Indeed! Today, the universal appeal of this nameplate remains stronger than ever. However, if we’re going to talk about timeless charisma, all modern Ferraris are nothing without its roots. Latest models of Ferrari cars are considered as the sweetest fruits of a legendary root - the first-built Ferrari car!

According to my source, Ferrari’s great grand origin is here and it is in great shape and running condition. This vehicle, complete with body kits and winch, will make its first-ever United States visit and will debut at the historic O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs, California. This splendid classic car is the first-ever built Ferrari tagged with Chassis Number 01C.

"This is the first time in 20 years this pristine automobile has made a public appearance. Ferrari has a unique history in Palm Springs, by recording its first western U.S. win here in 1951, and we’re bringing that excitement back with another historic Ferrari," says Paul Merrigan, the event organizer.

Moreover, the exhibit of the first-built Ferrari will take place this coming Friday, February 29, 2008 with the Tour Classique. Car enthusiasts and guests are obliged to take a close look on this vehicle and other stunning automobiles as they cruise past the streets of Palm Springs and other Coachella Valley cities starting 11 a.m. at the O’Donnell Golf Club.

"One of just a limited few built, the 1941 Packard is a perfect match for our event, because of its association with Darrin, who crafted many of his cars for the same celebrities that brought worldwide attention to Palm Springs in the early 1940s," says Merrigan, who notched first prize in the Post-war GT Italian Coachwork class at the world-renowned Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 1998.

Exotic car buffs, watch out! Two back-to-back exotic car events are set for Feb 22-24 and Mar. 1 in Palm Springs. Be sure to take note of the special dates.

The first event is the 44th Collector Car Show and Auction set on Feb. 2-24. The event, with over 600 collectable cars and trucks, is anticipated to captivate the hearts of aficionados. The auto show and auction will be presented by Keith McCormick at the Spa Resort Casino.

Additionally, on Mar. 1, Saturday the first annual Desert Classic Concours will be held at the O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs. Based on the popular Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, over 100 vehicles bearing millions as sticker price will wow aficionados. Cars include Aston Martins, Cords, Duisenbergs and other cars in rarity.

Admission will be $20 per individual. The proceeds of the said show will benefit Animal Samaritans SPCA, The Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center and College of the Desert.

"Palm Springs, which has always been home for many exotic cars, is the perfect setting for both events," said Keith McCormick, who is organizing the Concours along with Paul Merrigan of Indian Wells.

Expanded to 3 days, the Exotic Car Auction will feature more than 600 vehicles ranging from sports and muscle cars to antiques and exotics, The Desert Sun reported. "Something for everyone," McCormick said. Auction prices typically range from under $2,000 to more than $200,000.

The value of the cars auctioned in the past 12 months totaled more than $15 million, said Jason McCormick, manager. "The quality and value of the cars have been steadily improving," he said. The auction will start at 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For a photo preview of the exotic cars, visit www.classic-carauctions.com.

To note, McCormick has auction exotic cars for more than 2 decades now, has sold Frank Sinatra’s 1984 Rolls Royce Corniche convertible, Liberace’s 1984 Zimmer Golden Spirit and other remarkable cars.

You won’t need the Mats4Less all weather cargo liner to keep your ride dirt-proof. Just be there. No matter what.

Making A One-Of-A-Kind Car

Filed under: Uncategorized - BigPimple @ 4:23 am
It is not too hard to look for unique cars.  Wherever there are auto performance enthusiasts, there’s bound to be a unique car there.  But building one?  It entails a lot of hard work and a small fortune.  But I found an article on the World Wide Web which tackles the possibility of creating a unique car without burning a hole in your pocket.

Julian Edgar writes for autospeed and he has his ideas on how to make a really unique car.  Basically, in his article, he said that it is cost effective if one should just improve a mass produced vehicle to make it look different with a new body and by improving its performance.

"Rather than take just some bits from a donor car (whether that’s a Honda S2000 or a Mazda MX5), why not build the one-off car around all the mechanical bits of another car? The engine, driveline, brakes, suspension, instruments, wiring loom, engine management, traction control, ABS – the lot," writes Edgar.

He also said that there are some vehicles out there that can be easily made into a one-off car.  "If you picked a car with a low-mounted engine (like an Impreza WRX) or a mid-mount engine (like a Toyota MR2) you could surely change the shape of the body very considerably so that it wouldn’t resemble the donor in any visual way," he continued.

This is quite a good idea.  If you are really looking to buy a new unique car from a manufacturer of specialty cars, why not a used car and have its appearance changed?  It really makes a lot of sense since you only have to replace the auto body parts of the vehicle.

Best Luxury Cars Under $50K

Filed under: Uncategorized - BigPimple @ 2:07 am
Who says you have to spend big to have a fulfilling luxury car? That may not always be the case.

Forbes writes:

Pay $37,175 for the BMW Z4 Roadster, and you can cruise around town in a two-seater roadster that allows you to automatically control the drop top while listening to your favorite tunes through a 10-speaker audio system.

The $35,605 Lincoln MKX crossover utility vehicle is loaded with standard features like heated, dual power mirrors with memory, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with genuine wood accents, and four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system. Options include 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, a panoramic roof and a voice-activated DVD-based navigation system. The Volvo XC70, a $36,755 midsize wagon, is loaded with advanced safety features like hill descent control and full-length side curtain airbags.

Vincentric auto research firm provided maintenance costs calculated over a five-year period. Vehicles with the lowest costs, which include oil changes, wheel alignments and replacement wiper blades, made the list. Finally, we capped our list at cars costing $50,000; this allowed us to measure a wide range of vehicles, from coupes to large cars.

The under-$50,000 segment, meanwhile, is varied. You can find an Audi A3 wagon with a starting price of $25, 930 and a Saab 9-3 convertible beginning at $26,000. At the top end is the Land Rover SUV starting at $44,933 and the Mercedes SLK roadster with a base price of $46,000. Add in a few select options, and you can easily meet the $50,000 threshold.

Are those cars worth it? Weigh in. Still thinking about pricey Alfa Romeo parts and models? Cut the crap.

"You are treating yourself with these vehicles," said Stephanie Brinley, senior manager of product analysis at AutoPacific, a market research firm covering the auto industry. "It is reaching a level of maturity. You’ve reached a stage in your life where you want a little more luxury, and you can afford to purchase a vehicle with more amenities."

Luxury cars are now aimed at young professionals who have ever-increasing demands. As such, automakers see to it that the new demands are met. Otherwise, they’ll lose a significant slice of the market.

Before you purchase any of those cars, instill in your mind that once you tried luxury cars, you may never want any other.

Fiat 500: A Legendary Car

Filed under: Uncategorized - BigPimple @ 7:16 am

This is not Will Smith in I Am Legend, but its legacy shows that like the last man on earth in the movie, neither time nor age (which I consider as the worst virus on earth ever!) can stop it from becoming 2008’s Car of the Year.  I’m referring to Fiat.

For the record, this is definitely not the first time Fiat bagged the same award. According to autobloggreen.com, the Fiat 124 got it in 1967, Fiat 128 (1970), Fiat 127 (1972), Lancia Delta (1980), Fiat Uno (1984), Fiat Tipo (1989), Fiat Punto (1995), Fiat Bravo or Brava in 1996, Alfa (1998), Alfa 147 (2001), Fiat Panda (2004) and recently, the Fiat 500 that preceded Mazda and the Ford Mondeo with 385 votes from 58 European journalists that composed the jury members.

The Fiat 500 or “Cinquecento,” Italian word for 500, was first launched about 50 years ago. Take note: it sold about 3,893,294 units and was labelled as the top-selling Fiat that time.  It is said to be a great contributory factor in Italy’s industrialization progress.

According to worldcarfans.com, the Fiat 500 was also awarded the Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) five-star crash safety rating with its standard equipment including two dual stage front airbags, two front side airbags, two window bags and a driver’s knee airbag. It also features a high performance braking system, an ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

Cute and eco-friendly, the Fiat 500 comes in a retro-look but modern small car package, a 3-door model bearing compact dimensions - 355 centimeters long, 163 centimeters wide, 149 centimeters tall (does height measurement include the hood lift?)  and with a wheelbase of 230 centimeters.

It is considered as the most economical car in New Zealand with a choice of three engines designed to meet both the Euro-4 and Euro-5 environmental standards.

You can avail the Fiat 500 for $26,990 and get intimate with the legendary 2008 Car of the Year.

Audi ‘Godfather’ Ad Is A Super Bowl Star

Filed under: Uncategorized - BigPimple @ 1:50 am

What’s the most unique auto ad in the much-concluded Super Bowl?

Well, it comes from the manufacturer of Audi V8 Quattro parts. Yes, Audi’s ‘Godfather’ ad is a Super Bowl star!

So what made the “game within a game” so outstanding? The Associated Press gave a quick rundown…

Super Bowl Highlights:

Best Reference To A Classic Movie Scene:
Audi. In a replay of a vintage scene from "The Godfather," an older man wakes up in his luxurious bed and senses something amiss. In the movie, it’s a severed horse head which turns up under the sheets — here, it’s an oil-soaked grille from another car. "Old luxury just got put on notice," the tag line says, as a spanking new Audi speeds off.

Most Alarming Use of A Comb-Over: PepsiCo Inc. Guy nodding off while sitting at the bar in a diner, sending his massively exaggerated comb-over flailing in all directions. His state of sleepiness — along with a factory worker who’s watching a line of bobble-head dolls go by — is soon fixed with a dose of PepsiCo’s Diet Pepsi Max.

Best Use of Furry Creatures: Bridgestone Firestone North America. When a car comes rushing up on a squirrel munching on an acorn in the middle of the road, a chorus of creatures — including an owl, raccoon, deer, and even a turtle — unleashes terrorized screams that alert the driver to swerve and avoid the squirrel.

Most Blatant Use of South Asian Stereotype: Salesgenie.com sent out press materials this year saying it hoped to be named worst ad in the Super Bowl for the second year running, given all the attention it got last year. One of its contenders for Super Bowl XLII: An animated clunker featuring a hapless Indian salesman named Ramesh who has seven kids.

Cleverest Use of Swedish Words: Procter & Gamble Co.’s Tide to Go brand, for inserting several words of Swedish into the babble-talk spoken by a distracting stain chattering away on the front of a shirt worn by an applicant in the middle of a job interview.

The World’s First-Ever Amphibious Car

Filed under: Uncategorized - BigPimple @ 11:51 pm

So you love scuba diving? But you also enjoy driving? Well, why choose when you can do both at the same time?

Introducing the scuba car - the world’s first ever amphibious car. As we all know, an amphibious vehicle or craft is a means of transport feasible on both land and water, yeah, just like an amphibian. If ever your former habit was sleeping during your Biology class, well, a frog is the simplest example of an amphibian.

The scuba car is being developed by Rinspeed, a Swiss automobile manufacturer and tuning designer and is known for its eccentric concepts. Rinspeed’s scuba car is designed to run on both land and water (Hmm… swim is a more appropriate word, I guess).

The scuba car, that quite resembles a submarine, is water resistant and can hold water pressure 10 meters using jet drives in the bow and propellers in the stern. Remember the movie Scuba? Precisely! The car drew its inspiration from James Bond’s Lotus Esprit, the car he used in that film. It has an electric motor that drives the rear wheels. Carbon nano tubes give its driver and passenger the power to breathe fresh air from the self-contained on-board system. But for environmentalists out there, don’t worry ‘coz the scuba car guarantees zero emissions and zero pollution. Therefore, it doesn’t require such things like Acura Legend fog lights.

Rinspeed’s amphibious car will certainly be a hit in its launch at the Geneva Motor Show scheduled on March 6 to 16. However, like many other Rinspeed inventions, there are no plans yet of mass-producing the scuba car.
